04 - 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

# How to Make It:

01 - Line a 9x9-inch baking pan with parchment paper and lightly grease it.
02 - Divide the marshmallows and butter into three equal portions, approximately 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and 1 tablespoon butter for each color layer.
03 - In a large saucepan, melt 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Stir in a few drops of red gel food coloring until desired shade is achieved. Add 2 cups Rice Krispies and mix until evenly coated. Press evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan.
04 - Wipe the saucepan clean, then melt 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and stir until melted. Stir in vanilla extract. Add 2 cups Rice Krispies and mix until coated. Gently press over the red layer.
05 - Wipe the saucepan clean, then melt remaining 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add remaining marshmallows and stir until melted. Stir in a few drops of blue gel food coloring. Add remaining 2 cups Rice Krispies and mix until coated. Gently press over the white layer.
06 - Sprinkle the top with red, white, and blue sprinkles while the mixture is still slightly warm.
07 - Allow treats to cool and set for at least 1 hour. Lift from the pan using the parchment paper, slice into squares, and serve.

# Expert Tips:

01 -
  • They look impressive enough to bring to a party but require zero baking skills or fancy equipment.
  • The whole thing comes together in less than an hour, leaving you time to actually enjoy the holiday instead of being glued to the kitchen.
  • Gel food coloring creates those bold, unmistakable colors that make people actually gasp when you cut into them.
02 -
  • Gel food coloring is absolutely essential because liquid coloring will turn your beautiful marshmallow mixture into a wet, impossible-to-work-with mess that never sets properly.
  • Cleaning your saucepan between layers isn't just fussy kitchen theater; it genuinely prevents color bleeding and keeps your stripes defined and crisp instead of muddy and sad.
03 -
  • If your marshmallows start to cool and thicken before you've pressed them into the pan, just pop the whole saucepan back over low heat for fifteen seconds to loosen everything up again.
  • The parchment paper trick is life-changing: use it as handles to lift the entire finished treat out of the pan in one piece, then cut on a cutting board instead of in the pan for cleaner, straighter slices.
